so you read it again. and again. and it still doesn't tell you what you need to know.

that's the part that breaks people. not the number itself, the not-knowing whether to sign it or walk away.

why a venue quote alone tells you almost nothing

a $24K venue quote could be a steal. it could also be padded by $4K of charges the venue invented because they could. without context, the number is just a number. and venues know that.

most couples are getting their first (and only) venue quote of their lives. the venue coordinator does this every week. they know which line items couples question and which ones they just sign off on. they know that "event services fee" sounds official enough that nobody pushes back. they know "venue enhancement charge" sounds like it's covering something real.

  1. read every line out loud. if you can't explain what a line item is for in one sentence, that's the line to ask about.
  2. ask for an itemized breakdown of any fee over $1,000. especially the vaguely-named ones. a venue that won't itemize is a venue that doesn't want you to.
  3. compare site fee and F&B minimum to at least two comparable venues in your market. you don't have to actually tour them. a phone call and a request for a sample quote is enough.
